Meet Dr. Jay ApteDr. Jay Apte earned an integrative degree in Allopathic and Ayurvedic medicine from Poona University, India in 1973 and MS in Biomedical Sciences in 1990 from University of North Texas. She has been involved in Ayurvedic practice and teaching for last 30 years. Her experience encompasses private practice, research and teaching. In 1987, Dr. Jay Apte established The Ayurveda clinic to offer Ayurvedic health counseling and founded Herb Supplement Company Herbal Care which develops, markets and distributes Ayurvedic supplements throughout US. Determined to spread Ayurvedic wisdom to health care professionals, she opened an educational institution Ayurveda Institute of America (AIA) in 1999 in which internationally renowned Doctors teach authentic Ayurveda. AIA has branches in San Francisco, Los Angeles and in Hawaii. Many students are learning authentic Ayurveda, to practice and spread the wisdom around. Dr. Apte has offered lectures, seminars, workshops in many health conferences, prestigious universities, on radio and TV. Even if Dr. Apte has an integrative degree in conventional medicine and Ayurveda, she always walked on the Ayurvedic path. Why? Ever since, her teenage years, Dr. Apte observed how the East and West look at health and disease from drastically different angles. Conventional medicine aims at treating the disease with medicines and surgeries. Nutrition, Exercise and lifestyle are not emphasized at all. Ayurveda can be used in conjunction with western medicine. One can follow Ayurveda as a cure of disease already present in the body or mind and as prevention or simply to have a healthy life. For health issues like: hypertension, heart problems, diabetes or cancers to name a few, it is crucial to follow a certain diet and exercise routine. There is documented evidence available proving that meditation lowers high blood pressure and prevents heart problems. A daily Ayurvedic routine has proven to reduce stress and anxiety. Dr. Koop (former Surgeon General) has commented on the importance of diet, ‘No disease can be treated unless supplemented by right diet, but about 95% diseases can be prevented by diet alone’.
